The popularity of gods, like people, waxes and wanes. At the height of their power, they rule over mankind as they see fit. When their power fades, they too fade. But gods don't die of old age, and very few still have the power to destroy them outright. So they endure.

Athena, daughter of Zeus, king of the Olympian gods, lives a relatively normal life in New York City in the early twenty-first century. Thanks to some shrewd investments over the years, she lives comfortably and out of the spotlight - which is more than she can say for some of her relatives, who still grasp for power. Her apartment is upscale, but modest, and in the same building as her best friend and on-again-off-again companion, Victoria. From time to time she serves as a consultant for a variety of federal and international agencies, but always anonymously, and never favoring one side over another. She learned her lesson in antiquity.

She happens to be very good at chess, owns a niche bookstore in Soho that specializes in military history and tactics, and attends a knitting circle every week.

I am neither the goddess Athena, in any of her aspects, nor the actress Olivia Wilde. Feel free to contact me OOC here, or the character here. Athena is an ancient goddess living in modern times. Expect the unexpected.

If you want to talk mythology with me, or flesh out a pantheon, let me know. I know there are a lot of mythological characters out there, but Athena exists in my own universe, with my own incarnations of those characters, based on commonly accepted Greek mythology, unless otherwise agreed upon. It's just easier that way. Obviously, she'll interact with the other characters, but once she realizes they're not from her pantheon, she'll probably stop acting oddly towards them.
